Jean Hugo produced his best golf at Vaal de Grace Golf Estate and shot a final-round 64 to win his 17th Sunshine Tour title and 11th on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series.

The world number 234 had to fend off an impressive charge from youngster Jacques Kruyswijk, who fought tooth and nail right to the 18th.

“Jacques didn’t let up. I didn’t really make mistakes, but he didn’t either. It was a great battle,” said Hugo.

“I’m lucky to have pulled this off. It took 64. It was one of the best rounds that I’ve ever played.

“To stay in the moment for that long was very special for me.”

The 39-year-old overtook Ernie Els on the list of golfers with the most Sunshine Tour wins and rose into a share of sixth place alongside Tony Johnstone.

“It’s been a long time that I’ve been a professional,” said Hugo. “All the hard work will pay off when you need it. And today I needed it.”

Hugo finished on 21-under-par 195, one ahead of Kruyswijk with Zander Lombard (198) and Michael Hollick (199) also dipping under the magical 200 mark.
