Milnerton Golf Club’s Mid-Amateur team beat hot favourites Westlake in the final of the WPGU Mid-Amateur League on Saturday 25 November 2017
On route to the final, in the pool stages, Milnerton were undefeated beating King David-Mowbray 6-2, Metropolitan 5.5-2.5, Clovelly 5.5-2.5, Steenberg 4.5-3.5, Parow 5-3 and a strong Bellville team 4.5-3.5 to finish top of the leagues’ Province Section and qualify for the semi-finals. The semi-final scheduled to be against Strand was conceded after they failed to field a team.
The final at Steenberg was always going to be a close affair against a very strong Westlake team who had won the league in the previous two years.
In sunny, slightly windy conditions Jason Plumbly won the first point for Milnerton winning his match 7&6, soon to be followed by Jonno Kotze who won his match 3&2 to give Milnerton a 2-0 lead. Steenberg then pulled two matches back to level at 2-2 as Donavan Dawson lost 3&2, and an out of sorts Weyers Janse van Rensburg lost 6&5 to Elton James. Steenberg then crept in front when a red-hot Aaron Russel beat Giles Buchanan 5&3 leaving the final in the balance with 3 games still to be completed.
At this stage Roy Wynton was 1-up playing 16, Gareth Johnston also 1-up playing 17 and Greg Sheard was 2-up after 15. Roy Wynton missed a chance to go dormy 2-up after three putting the par 3, 16th, before making birdie on the par 5, 17th to win his match 2&1 to make the final all square at 3 each. After halving the 17th, Gareth Johnston hit his drive out of bounds on the 18thand lost the hole to halve his match. Leaving matters level at 3.5 each with the final match out on the 17th.
Greg Sheard was still 2-up on Brent Kirstein of Westlake, and after pushing his second shot into the rough on the right Greg hit a great wedge to 8 foot. Meanwhile Kirstein’s 2nd was caught up in the left rough just short of the green, and after electing to putt from there, left himself with a 12 footer for birdie, which he missed leaving Greg with two putts to half and win his match and the final. Greg’s 8 footer shaved the hole, leaving the hole halved giving him a 2&1 win and the vital point that won Milnerton the final by 4.5 to 3.5.
This win was a fantastic achievement for Milnerton, that consisted not only of the 8 players that played in the final, but it was richly deserving for the full squad of 12 players, which included:
Greg Sheard 3-0-0
Weyers Janse van Rensburg 4 -0- 2
Donavan Dawson 4-0-2
Mike Gomes 4-0-1
Shaun Buchan 2-0-1
Darren Devlin 3-0-3
Jonno Kotze 3-1-1
Roy Wynton 5-0-2
Garreth Johnston 3-3.5-0
Giles Buchanan 0-0-2
Hendrik van den Berg 1-0-2
Jason Plumbly 3-0-0
