It was great to be back at The Wild Coast Sun with our group in July. I attended the opening of the course in 1982 and although a number of changes have been made, Fred Beaver and his team still produce a great golfing experience. For the Gautengers the wind proved to be a major factor and I had the experience of hitting a 9 iron one day and a 3 wood the next day on the 13th, the 145 metre hole across the gorge!
On the international side Rory McIlroy dominated The Open and with a six-shot lead going into the final round cruised to a two shot victory and he’s back challenging for the number one spot in the world. Nice to see his ex fiancée Caroline Wozniacki win the Istanbul Ladies Open tennis tournament over the same weekend. As far as South Africans are concerned a great win for Tim Clark in the US while Lee-Anne Pace won a “paltry” R687 000 finishing 4th in an LPGA event. On the local Gauteng front I have recently played Glendower, Copperleaf, Country Club Johannesburg and Bryanston CC and it’s good to see these clubs busy and rounds of golf increasing. With proactive management, I believe that golf clubs will flourish and it’s up to the clubs which are struggling to improve their product and management input.
My Moan of the Month – Why do clubs in SA offer R60.00 halfway meals which take up to half-an-hour to consume? Copperleaf have it right with their Grab and Go policy. I would like to have your comments on the halfways in SA.
Due to a major conference group requesting dates, Lynn has moved her ladies event at Champagne Sports to Wednesday 12 – Saturday 15 November 2014. The response from the 80 ladies who have already booked has been positive so ladies make your booking soon.
