Tee and Sandwedges Publishers Note November 2013

The beginning of November and most of the inland courses have had their first spring thundershowers and ugly brown fairways have turned to lush green in colour and golfers are back out enjoying the sunshine and cold beer at the 19th.It’s great to see the Volvo Tournament is back at Durban Country Club in January 2014. The event invites 32 of the winners and top ranked players and hopefully, weather permitting, this will be a great spectacle for SA golfers.

The European Tour kicks off in SA with the playing of the SA Open at Glendower and The Dunhill at leopard Creek. These events are perfectly placed just before the newly formatted Nedbank Challenge and I’m sure a number of the world’s top players will spend three-weeks enjoying the balmy weather and hospitality in South Africa.

The Sanlam Cancer Challenge finals were held at Sun City recently and again proved to be the most successful amateur golf event in Africa. Approximately 100 golfers from clubs all over South Africa and Namibia challenged the Lost City and Gary Player Golf Courses with widely different degrees of success?

Stableford points varied from 40 to 15 but all players enjoyed the camaraderie and spirit during the three-day event. Best comment I heard was “This is South Africa’s answer to The Masters for Amateur Golfers”. A wonderful event which raised R3 million in the fight against cancer. November is a great month for golf media with invites to play at Sun City, Glendower, Durban Country Club and the M-Net Cares final at Kyalami. It’s bad when golf affects one’s work but it’s also great!  Lynn’s 120 ladies are off to Champagne Sports Resort in November and at this “no men allowed” event the girls certainly let their hair down.

The Champagne Valley will certainly reverberate with squeals of delight both on and off the course. In December we are off to Zebula and in 2014 have events at Legends, Euphoria, Wild Coast Sun and in June we are off to the Belle Mare Plage luxury resort on Mauritius. We have already received a number of enquiries on the Mauritius trip which takes place from 14 – 21 June 2014 and in conjunction with Thompsons Holidays this should be a winner.

See you on the Tee
