DURING July we took a group of golfers to Selborne and Umdoni Park to enjoy the normally balmy weather of Southern KZN. We had everything – cold, heat, rain and lots of wind. The Durbanites thought the wind was just a breeze while the Gautengers though it was gale force. The two courses were in good condition considering the drought that the whole of KZN has suffered although the day after we left the area experienced major flooding. Having not stayed at the Selborne Lodge for about 15 years it was great to discover that the lodge, now under new management of the First Hotels Group, is back to its excellent best.
Our next promotions are to the Graceland Resort in October and December and where else can you get a package of two rounds of golf, accommodation with
breakfast and prizes for only R800? Back soon! We are also looking to do a promotion to the revamped Euphoria Estate in early November.
The four Majors are now completed and with four new champions. The Big 4 – Day, McIlroy, Spieth and Johnston – must certainly be feeling the pressure from these winners. It’s amazing how Branden Grace always rises towards the top at
these Majors. I’m sure his time will come soon.
It’s sad to hear that Benoni Country Club’s existence is under threat from developers but the good news is that the Executive Committee seem to have the situation in hand. With the club providing a green belt and the other major residential developments in the area going forward, Benoni residents need this facility.
So what’s so great about Jim Furyk shooting 58 on the PGA Tour? Some of my fellow golfers regularly shoot 57 or 58 at out Thirsty Thursday competition (nine holes, though!). I’m sure however they’ll always beat Furyk at the 19th!
See you on the Tee.
