There is an old golf adage that says you drive for show and putt for dough. A group of four golfers did just that, but by substituting the traditional blade with a bunker rake and a snooker cue.

Sunshine Tour professionals Rhys West and Justin Turner joined amateurs Carmen Hargroves and Kerry Murgatroyd in a fun “putt-off” before the official Pro-Am for the Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung tournament at Vaal de Grace Golf Estate.

In a mini putting contest over three holes, they each used a putter (with the pros having to putt left-handed), a bunker rake and a snooker cue before testing their darts skills in a “throw-off” to decide the winners.

“A snooker cue and some darts … this takes my back to my misspent youth,” said Turner, who, along with partner Hargroves, was relegated to the runners-up spot by the duo of West and Murgatroyd.

“It was lots of fun and it is always nice to be involved in something that supports a worthy cause,” added Turner.

That worthy cause is a cash donation to charity by event sponsors Vodacom.

The charity theme for the series this year is gender-based violence, and the official charities are MEMEZA, a crime prevention and women empowerment initiative focused on Community Policing to safeguard women and families in vulnerable areas; and Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA).
