Goose bags Open spot

RETIEF Goosen booked a coveted spot in this month’s Open Championship at St Andrews by coming through Final Qualifying at Woburn Golf Club in England. And the Goose had to overcome some serious fatigue as he only had four hours’ sleep the night before the 36-hole shootout as he was in Germany following his tied fourth place finish in the BMW International Open in that country. The Goose posted five-under-par 140 for the two rounds of qualifying only to find himself in a a play-off for one remaining spot and birdied the first extra hole to eliminate English pair Adam Gee and Jamie Moul. “I won two Dunhill Cups at St Andrews (with Ernie Els and David Frost in 1997 and 1998) and first played it when I was 18, so I’ve walked a good few miles on that wonderful Old Course and I love it.”
