Keeping up with the Joneses in February 2014

Tee and Sandwedges February 2014

Tee and Sandwedges Publishers Note February 2014

Having left Durban more than 10 years ago for Joburg I had forgotten how the combination of heat and humidity could affect golfers both on and off the course. At the Volvo Champions Event I watched the “slim” Darren Clarke step away twice from his final 20cm putt as perspiration ran off his nose onto his ball which fortunately did not move. I wonder what the rules official would have done if his ball had moved closer to the hole. The Volvo Championship was an excellently organised event and it was great to see Louis win but I don’t understand how he hits the ball so far when he swings so slowly?

While in Durban I had the pleasure of playing at my old club Royal Durban which always seems flat and easy. My first drive finished about a metre off the fairway and after a 5 minute search in 10cm grass I was back to the tee box. Royal has had some problems lately but with the members and the committee working together the Grand Old Lady is back at its best and still a challenge at all levels of golfers.

From Durban we moved up the North Coast to the fast developing Prince’s Grant Estate to play in the Hugh Baiocchi Celebrity Am-am which is part of the Invitational amateur event held annually at the beautiful estate. We stayed at the luxurious Lodge which with 8 rooms is the perfect venue for golf groups visiting the North Coast Tee and Sandwedges has continued to grow and we are with partners Thompsons Holidays, Air Mauritius and Tourism Malaysia organising trips to Mauritius and Malaysia which will coinside with the CIMB Classic event in October.

On the local front our trips to Legend and the Easter Euphoria are going well while our new Wild Coast Sun Mixed Event in July has had a great response from our golfers. The Champagne Sports Resort Senior event is in May, and with the combined age groups being over 100, 115 and 130 we look forward to seeing some “old” friends at this event. PS We have had a request for an over 150 years section from two ladies. Lynn’s Women’s Event in November is already receiving a number of entries from new golfers and with the new Alliance Format (Alliance and Betterball prizes) this event will be a sell out.

See you on the tee
