Keeping up with the Joneses in July 2015

Tee and Sandwedges July 2015

Tee and Sandwedges Publishers Note July 2015
BEING a co-owner of a golf publication certainly has its trials and tribulations with advertisers expecting high quality from low resolution images and last minute changes of copy. Gremlins also creep in, an example being after four spelling checks we managed to spell Africa – Afrika in our last issue.

All the pain was however taken away when we were invited to report on the Telkom SuperSport Shootout at the luxurious Zimbali Resort on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Arriving from Johannesburg in four layers of clothes we quickly changed to a golf shirt and shorts and enjoyed four days of balmy KZN weather. The event itself – excellent – and it was great to see leaders of industry and sports stars communicating with a common goal of raising funds for the three charities tied to this event.

Cheating at golf has again raised its ugly head and stories of players playing under their handicaps and still losing matches abound.

Unlike clubs who are understandably nervous of legal implications, a well-known golfer is threatening to name and shame both professional and amateur players around the country.

The “forward” tees are also a nightmare. Why can’t all golfers play off one tee and be handicapped accordingly? As a 71-year-old I can’t get up to par-4s in two but hopefully will be handicapped with this in mind. This month, the British Open and we are off to Selborne and Umdoni.
Don’t forget our Women’s Day open event at Euphoria and I will see you on the tee! Allan Jones
