INTO March and the Sunshine Tour is well under way and Branden Grace certainly seems to be a player to watch this year. Internationally South Africans are missing cuts regularly and other than the ‘oldies’ like Tim Clark and Retief Goosen, no decent results have been achieved. What’s happened to Louis Oosthuizen? Injury problems again?
I recently attended the Central Gauteng Golf Union’s awards dinner and it was great to see the spirit and camaraderie among clubs in the union. I was fortunate enough to sit next to Bill Swailes, the acting CEO of the union who was delighted to inform me that the clubs have agreed to market themselves as a whole and there are exciting plans to make golf and golf clubs more attractive to players and their families throughout the region.
The Gary Player Country Club course at Sun City has always been one of my favourites and I was thrilled to join the 50 senior amateurs at the Players Championship at the resort.
Temperatures of 35 deg C plus certainly did not deter the competitors although some of the players, after four rounds, were feeling their respective ages. To ‘Phillie’ and his team – thanks for a great event on and off the course.
On the Tee and Sandwedges Promotions Calendar, we have the first ladies’ event at the Euphoria Golf Estate and Hydro this month and in a couple of months’ time we have the senior event at the beautiful Champagne Sports Resort. This popular event is broken down into men’s, ladies and mixed sections and will be held from May 3-6. One of the players is arranging a 12-seater so if you require a lift please let me know.
See you on the tee.
